Many people in the United States shop at the membership-based chain store Costco, purchasing food, daily necessities, and Kirkland Signature products, among other things. In addition, Costco also offers travel services known as Costco Travel.
Generally speaking, the travel packages provided by Costco Travel are known for being cost-effective, but the price for one particular global cruise trip reaches nearly $300,000, which is quite astounding. One of the reasons for the high price, as revealed by Costco executives, is that this trip includes two destinations.
Recently, during a financial report conference call for the first quarter, Costco’s Chief Financial Officer Gary Millerchip shared some “interesting” facts about Costco’s exclusive member travel services. He disclosed that Costco Travel sold reservations for a 150-day global cruise package priced at $293,000.
“Our biggest cruise booking last year was for a 150-day global cruise trip departing from Fort Lauderdale with stops at destinations like the Galapagos Islands and Easter Island,” he told analysts and investors.
The Galapagos Islands, located 1000 kilometers off the coast of South America in the Pacific Ocean, consist of 19 volcanic islands and surrounding waters, renowned as a unique “living museum and showcase of evolutionary processes.” Part of Ecuador, the Galapagos Islands are approximately 1000 kilometers from the capital, Quito.
Easter Island, also known as Rapa Nui, lies deep in the western Pacific Ocean, about 3600 kilometers away from the mainland. From nature exploration to cultural experiences, Easter Island offers a diverse range of unique experiences.
The island boasts breathtaking natural landscapes, romantic white sandy beaches, turquoise-like waters, giant palm trees, peculiar volcanic cones, and more. There are over 900 oddly shaped giant stone statues scattered across the island, with their origins still shrouded in mystery, making it one of Chile’s most distinctive tourist attractions and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Both of these destinations are located in remote corners of the world, making them challenging to reach for the average traveler.
According to Millerchip, the six-figure price of this travel package includes booking an Owner’s Suite on the cruise ship for two people.
“The total price for two guests staying in the Owner’s Suite cabin is $293,000, with additional benefits including a $13,000 onboard credit and a $25,000 Costco shopping card,” he said.
Millerchip did not specify which cruise line operates this global journey.
“We offer a variety of vacation packages, car rentals, cruises, hotels, flights, and other travel-related services,” Millerchip stated. “In addition to attractive prices, many of our products also come with Costco shopping cards, which are additional benefits when booking through Costco.”
Consumers can use Costco shopping cards to pay for membership fees and purchase a variety of goods sold by Costco.
Millerchip also pointed out that Costco Travel members tend to spend roughly twice as much as non-users of these services.
Last year, Costco Travel’s car rental numbers were also astonishing.
“Last year, our car rental services were enough to fill every parking spot in a U.S. Costco store 8.5 times over,” Millerchip stated.
Costco’s travel services allow members to book affordable international vacations, cruises, car rentals, and more, with prices often lower than those of traditional travel agencies. Costco Travel states on its website, “We leverage our purchasing power to negotiate the best deals in the market, and then pass on the savings to Costco members.”
Costco’s travel budgeting is also straightforward, as they clearly price their travel products, allowing customers to know the travel costs before making reservations.
As of the end of the first quarter, Costco has over 600 stores in the United States and more than 270 stores in other countries/regions.
Costco’s first-quarter revenue was $62.15 billion, with approximately $60.98 billion coming from net sales and membership fees accounting for about $1.17 billion.
Costco reports that around 138.8 million people hold Costco membership cards.
