4-Year-Old Son of Law Man Yu “Accidentally Swallows Coin and Chokes” Urgently Rushed to Hospital, Endures 8 Hours of Agony

The King of Golden Melody Hakka Song, Luo Wenyu, got married in 2015 and has a pair of children with his wife, Zhang Ping. Yesterday evening (29th), he shocked everyone by revealing on Facebook that his 4-year-old son accidentally swallowed a coin, which made him cry and rush to the hospital while riding his bicycle frantically. It took them a harrowing 8 hours before successfully removing the coin from the esophagus.

Luo Wenyu took to Facebook yesterday with a post titled “A Startling Memory.” He mentioned that on Sunday, while his son was napping, he suddenly woke up crying and saying, “There’s a coin stuck in my throat, it hurts.” He quickly grabbed his son, held him upside down and continuously patted his back, also attempting to use his fingers to check his throat, but the son resisted and kept crying in pain. This led him to urgently ride his bicycle with his son to the Taipei Chang Gung Hospital for emergency treatment.

Tears streaming down his face as he rode the bike, he anxiously prayed for safety. Once at the hospital, his son was examined and due to extreme tension, he vomited on the floor. At that moment he thought to himself: “Why didn’t anything come out when he vomited? It should be fine!” However, after an X-ray, it was discovered that indeed a coin was stuck in the esophagus.

Later, Luo Wenyu and his wife transferred their son to the Linkou Chang Gung Hospital for further treatment. After consultation with doctors, it was determined that general anesthesia was necessary to remove the coin using medical instruments. The process of drawing blood, endoscopic examination, wailing, parents’ heartache, and tears in just a moment…After nearly 8 hours of torment, the coin stuck in the child’s esophagus was finally removed.

Reflecting on the incident, Luo Wenyu felt very grateful and also learned some important lessons. He pondered why his four-year-old child would do such a thing, only to remember his son saying later, “I suddenly felt like putting something in my mouth.” So, he fell asleep with a coin in his mouth. He also felt fortunate that his son did not swallow a flat round battery or accidentally block his airway while asleep, as the consequences could have been unimaginable.

“Do not assume that children always know, there are many dangerous things that must be continuously reminded and taught.” He also reminded parents to ensure that coins, buttons, batteries, and other items are cleared from the bedside; keep them in hard-to-reach places.
