4.8-magnitude Earthquake Strikes Ludian County, Zhaotong, Yunnan, Causing Casualties

After a 4.4-magnitude earthquake hit Ludian County, Zhaotong City, Yunnan Province on the evening of October 10, another earthquake of 4.8 magnitude occurred at 11:18 am on October 11. According to local netizens, the earthquake caused the collapse of old houses in the area, resulting in one person being seriously injured and one person dead.

China Earthquake Networks Center reported that the 4.8-magnitude earthquake struck Ludian County in Zhaotong City at 11:18 am on October 11 (27.03 degrees north latitude, 103.46 degrees east longitude), with a depth of 10 kilometers.

Local netizens shared their experiences, with one saying, “Today is worse than last night, very scary.” Another mentioned feeling dizzy even while sitting on the ground. A resident on the 20th floor described feeling unsteady when walking, and someone else on a similar floor witnessed the swinging of lights. They expressed experiencing continuous earthquakes for two days.

Videos uploaded by local residents showed people fleeing outside for safety during the earthquake. Students from a middle school were seen moving from classrooms to the playground for refuge. A netizen in the video urged others, “Be very afraid, brothers and sisters, run outside quickly once an earthquake strikes.”

According to CCTV News, the earthquake was felt in nearby areas such as Zhaoyang District and Zhenxiong County of Zhaotong City, Huize County and Xuanwei City of Qujing City. There have been no reports of casualties or property damages so far. However, a Ludian netizen mentioned, “We have lost old houses here, one person is seriously injured, and one person is dead.”

Additionally, on October 10 at 9:21 pm, Ludian County in Zhaotong City (27.00 degrees north latitude, 103.44 degrees east longitude) experienced a 4.4-magnitude earthquake with a depth of 10 kilometers. Residents in Ludian County and surrounding areas like Zhaoyang District and Qiaojia County reported strong tremors.

According to the recent earthquake catalog from the China Earthquake Networks Center, within 200 kilometers around the epicenter, there have been 144 earthquakes of magnitude 3 or above in the past five years. A netizen warned, “A major earthquake may be imminent, so be extremely cautious!”
