4.7 magnitude earthquake hits Lushan County, Sichuan Province, with tremors felt in many areas.

On October 12, 2025, a magnitude 4.7 earthquake struck Lushan County, Ya’an City, Sichuan Province, with a depth of 10 kilometers. Netizens from Chengdu, Leshan, and other areas reported feeling the tremors, with some describing it as “very scary.”

China Earthquake Networks Center officially confirmed the earthquake that occurred at 15:21 on October 12 in Lushan County, Ya’an City, at a depth of 10 kilometers. The epicenter was located at 30.48 degrees north latitude and 103.09 degrees east longitude. The average altitude within 5 kilometers of the epicenter was about 1385 meters, with distances of 29 kilometers to Baoxing County, 37 kilometers to Qionglai City, 40 kilometers to Lushan County, 42 kilometers to Dayi County, 46 kilometers to Mingshan District, 53 kilometers to Ya’an City, and 96 kilometers to Chengdu City.

According to Jiemu News, on the afternoon of October 12, a resident near the epicenter described the earthquake feeling like a sudden jolt as if they were in a moving car. A guesthouse owner nearby also mentioned feeling a slight shake during the earthquake.

Multiple netizens left comments reporting tremors felt in areas like Leshan, Lushan County, Ya’an Yucheng District, and Chengdu Qionglai City.

In recent years, Lushan County has experienced multiple earthquakes. On June 1, 2022, a 6.1 magnitude earthquake occurred near Lushan County. In April 20, 2013, a devastating 7.0 magnitude earthquake hit Lushan County, resulting in 196 deaths and 21 missing.

This recent earthquake in Sichuan Province is the second to have occurred in the area.

On October 9 at 1:17 PM, Ganzi Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture’s Xinlong County experienced a sudden loud noise followed by a 5.4 magnitude earthquake with a depth of 10 kilometers. The epicenter was located at 30.84 degrees north latitude and 99.86 degrees east longitude.

Media reports stated that Mr. Zhang from Gulucun, Youyi Township near the epicenter, mentioned being busy in his store when he heard a loud noise coming from the ground. Shortly after, he felt everything shaking, causing items on the shelves to fall to the ground. The intense shaking lasted for over 20 seconds, and even standing in an open street felt unstable as if standing on an inflatable castle.

As of 2:00 PM that day, there were nine recorded aftershocks, with one registering above 3.0 magnitude.

Apart from the earthquakes in Sichuan, Yunnan’s Zhaotong also experienced a 4.8 magnitude earthquake on October 11.

Blogger “Chengguan” mentioned that after seeing the news of the earthquake on the 11th, he immediately messaged his friend in Zhaotong, asking, “Did you feel the tremor?” His friend replied that the glass at home shook twice, leading neighbors to come out into the yard to watch the sky.

Publicly available information indicates that Zhaotong, Yunnan, has experienced over 144 earthquakes of magnitude 3 or higher in the past few years.
