4.4-magnitude earthquake hits Tuokexun County in Turpan City, Xinjiang

At 2:39 on July 10th, a 4.4 magnitude earthquake struck Tuokexun County, Turpan City, Xinjiang. The epicenter was at a depth of 20 kilometers.

According to the China Earthquake Networks Center, the epicenter was located at 43.00 degrees north latitude and 88.28 degrees east longitude. Villages within a 10-kilometer radius of the earthquake include Sai Mailisi, Kelajian Village, Kujayi Village, Aqike, Wuyiman Maili, Qimukuotan, Qimukutaile. Towns within a 20-kilometer radius include Kujayi Town and Kelajian Town.

The epicenter is 37 kilometers from Tuokexun County, 41 kilometers from Dabancheng District, 74 kilometers from Gaochang District, 87 kilometers from Urumqi County, 103 kilometers from Tianshan District, 74 kilometers from Turpan City, and 103 kilometers from Urumqi City.

According to comments on local social media platforms, Changji, Gaochang District, Dabancheng, Shihezi, and other areas felt the earthquake. Kurla and Urumqi felt it strongly, with many netizens saying they were “awakened” by the shaking.

According to the China Earthquake Networks Center, within a radius of 200 kilometers of the epicenter, there have been a total of 50 earthquakes of magnitude 3 or above in the past five years. The largest earthquakes were a 4.8 magnitude earthquake in Changji City, Changji Prefecture, Xinjiang on July 20, 2022 (186 kilometers from the epicenter of this earthquake) and a 4.8 magnitude earthquake in Tuokexun County, Turpan City, Xinjiang on August 8, 2020 (56 kilometers from the epicenter of this earthquake).
