4.1 Magnitude Earthquake in Tennessee Affects Southeastern United States

On Saturday morning, a 4.1 magnitude minor earthquake struck the southeastern vicinity of Greenback, Tennessee. The epicenter ranged from Knoxville and Chattanooga in Tennessee to Atlanta, Georgia, Asheville in North Carolina, and Greenville in South Carolina.

According to information from the US Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake occurred shortly after 9 a.m. on Saturday with a depth of about 15.5 miles.

The East Tennessee Seismic Zone spans across eastern Tennessee and northwestern Georgia, extending to northeastern Alabama. It is one of the most active seismic zones in the southeastern United States.

Although the region has not experienced any major earthquakes, several minor earthquakes in the area have resulted in minor damages.
