3 dead and 5 missing in Guangxi mountain flood, 4 more rounds of widespread rainfall expected in the future.

In the early morning of May 23rd, around 5 am, a sudden flash flood and mudslide occurred in Sanshe Village, Sishui Township, Longsheng County, Guilin, Guangxi Province. As of now, it is reported that 3 people have died and 5 are missing.

According to Beijing Daily, 10 houses in Sanshe Village have been damaged, with 8 people missing and 3 injured. So far, 3 missing persons have been found, but all of them showed no signs of life. A total of 2376 people are at risk due to the threat of flash floods and mudslides.

Given the Chinese Communist Party’s tendency to conceal the truth, the actual extent of the disaster is still subject to verification.

An article from Oriental Daily quoted a villager saying that around 4 am on the 23rd, he was awakened by thunder and rain. Upon stepping outside, he noticed a lot of mud on the road and witnessed houses being washed away.

According to a report from Extreme News on the 24th, several wooden houses along a roughly 20-meter-wide ditch have suffered varying degrees of damage, with some foundations hanging in the air. Cars can be seen overturned by the riverside, alongside tilted power poles and trees. Many roads are still filled with flowing water.

The Hydrological Center of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region announced on the 23rd that due to heavy rainfall, 7 rivers and 9 stations in the area, including the Guyi River and the Lantian River (a tributary of the Xiang River), have experienced flooding above the alert level by 0.07 to 0.97 meters.

During a flood prevention work coordination meeting on the same day, Chen Gang, the Secretary of the Guangxi Provincial Party Committee and the Chairman of the Standing Committee of the People’s Congress, mentioned that there are expected to be 4 rounds of large-scale rainfall in the future. The rain will be widespread, with heavy cumulative precipitation overlapping with the previous rainfall areas, showing significant extreme weather characteristics, numerous hidden risks, and a high disaster risk.

Due to extreme weather conditions, various natural disasters such as floods and mudslides have recently occurred in multiple regions across the mainland.

On the 22nd, two landslides occurred in Changshi Town and Guowa Township of Dafang County, Bijie City, Guizhou Province, resulting in 4 deaths and 17 people missing. As of May 23rd, 299 households totaling 746 people have been evacuated.

On the same day, Wuhan, Hubei Province, issued consecutive “red rainstorm alerts” and “urban rainstorm disaster warnings.” In the afternoon, water at the entrance of Wuhan University reached a depth of 1 meter, causing traffic congestion. Videos from the scene showed several vehicles submerged and pedestrians wading through shoulder-high water while crossing the road.

Furthermore, netizens have shared videos showing leaks in multiple areas of Wuhan University People’s Hospital due to the rain, resembling “water curtains,” and significant water accumulation at the Wuhan Metro station at Wuchang Railway Station.
