21 Southern California Weekly Newspapers Simultaneously Publish Articles Urging Support for Taiwan’s Participation in the United Nations System

The 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly will convene on September 10 (Monday). The print and online versions of Ontario News Press and 21 city weekly editions under Beacon Media News in Southern California, the United States, simultaneously published an article titled “To secure peace in the Indo-Pacific, include Taiwan in the UN system” by Taiwan’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Joseph Wu from September 5 to 11. The article featured Minister Wu’s photo and urged support for Taiwan’s inclusion in the United Nations system.

In his article, Minister Wu pointed out that Taiwan manufactures 90% of the world’s high-end semiconductor products and the majority of advanced chips needed for the AI revolution, making it an indispensable partner in the global supply chain. Additionally, about half of the world’s freighters navigate the Taiwan Strait, a crucial international waterway. Peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait bring prosperity internationally. However, China continues to escalate provocations against Taiwan, seeking to unilaterally change the status quo in the Taiwan Strait and expand its authoritarian influence in the Indo-Pacific region, posing a severe threat to global peace and security.

Minister Wu stated that the most urgent task for the United Nations is to stop yielding to pressure from the People’s Republic of China (PRC) and not to distort Resolution 2758 adopted by the UN General Assembly in 1971. The PRC maliciously misinterprets this resolution, linking it inappropriately with its “One China Principle.” In reality, the PRC’s “One China Principle” starkly differs from the “One China Policy” adopted by most countries worldwide.

Minister Wu emphasized that Beijing’s fallacies will not only change the status quo in the Taiwan Strait but will also jeopardize peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region, threatening the rules-based international order. He called on the United Nations to address pressing security issues in the upcoming 79th session of the General Assembly and “Future Summit,” urging Taiwan’s participation in the UN system to mitigate potential regional crises and safeguard peace in the Taiwan Strait.

The article was published in a total of 21 newspapers under the Beacon Media News group, including Alhambra Press, Anaheim Press, Arcadia Weekly, Azusa Beacon, Baldwin Park Press, Belmont Beacon, Burbank Independent, Corona News Press, Covina Press, Duarte Dispatch, El Monte Examiner, Monrovia Weekly, Monterey Park Press, Ontario News Press, Pasadena Independent, Riverside Independent, Rosemead Reader, San Bernardino Press, San Gabriel Sun, Temple City Tribune, and West Glendale Independent, highlighting the importance Southern California local media places on Taiwan’s international participation.
