January 17, 2025 marked the 20th anniversary of the passing of Zhao Ziyang, former Premier of the State Council of China and General Secretary of the Communist Party of China. On January 17, a few plainclothes personnel were observed guarding both the northern and southern entrances of 6 Fuqiang Hutong, without any uniformed police officers present.

According to previous reports by Radio Free Asia, Zhao Ziyang lived in this residence for 16 years. On October 18, 2019, the ashes of Zhao Ziyang and his wife were buried together in a cemetery in Changping. Previously, Zhao Ziyang’s ashes had been kept at the courtyard residence of 6 Fuqiang Hutong in Beijing. Every year during the Qingming Festival, as well as on his memorial day and birthday, a large number of old colleagues and villagers would gather to pay their respects. In 2021, the Chinese Communist Party Central Committee ordered Zhao Ziyang’s family to vacate the former residence.
