According to the 2026 new list of the most difficult colleges to get into in the United States by the well-known American education evaluation institution Niche, a college in California once again topped the list with an extremely low acceptance rate, surpassing Ivy League schools.
It is widely believed in the industry that the acceptance rates of top universities are often very low, with the world’s most exceptional students competing for spots at elite institutions. Many of the most selective colleges are Ivy League schools or renowned technical institutes around the world.

Here are the latest rankings of the 10 most difficult colleges to get into in the U.S., three of which are located in California.
#1: California Institute of Technology (Caltech)
Located in Pasadena, California, the California Institute of Technology is a world-renowned research institution focusing on science and engineering. Despite its smaller size, the college has incredibly high admission standards. The institute is also responsible for managing NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL).
