In 2025, the United States is set to implement several new travel regulations that will impact both domestic and international travelers. According to ABC News reports, here are the key changes you need to be aware of:
Starting from May 7th, the US Department of Homeland Security will enforce the requirement of Real ID at airports and certain federal facilities. American citizens are advised to check and update their identification documents as soon as possible to ensure compliance and avoid being unable to board flights.
The Real ID Act was passed by Congress in 2005 in response to the recommendations of the 9/11 Commission, aiming to establish uniform standards for identification documents such as driver’s licenses.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the implementation of Real ID has been postponed multiple times by the Department of Homeland Security. Beginning in May 2025, all travelers will be required to present identification documents that meet the Real ID standards (or legitimate alternative such as a passport) to board domestic flights or enter certain government facilities.
Starting from January 8th, 2025, travelers to the United Kingdom will need to apply for an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA). The ETA system is designed to allow UK authorities to pre-screen travelers, reduce potential security risks, and enhance border efficiency.
The cost of an ETA is approximately $13 and it is not a visa nor does it replace existing visa requirements. American travelers can apply for an ETA through the official UK government website or ETA application. The ETA is valid for two years and allows multiple entries into the UK.
The European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) is expected to come into effect in May 2025. US passport holders who previously did not require a visa to travel to Europe will now need to apply for authorization through the ETIAS platform.
Once authorized, travelers can make multiple entries into participating countries within 180 days, with the usual maximum stay being 90 days. The validity of ETIAS can be up to three years, but a renewal is required if the passport expires.
While the application fee for ETIAS is only about $7, the approval process may take several days to weeks, therefore travelers are advised to apply well in advance.
The US Department of Transportation (DOT) has implemented new regulations in 2025 requiring airlines to provide easier refunds for passengers in the event of flight cancellations or other major changes. According to the new regulations,
– Passengers who choose not to take a rebooked flight are entitled to an automatic refund;
– Passengers have the right to a luggage fee refund if their baggage is delayed for more than 12 hours (15-30 hours for international flights);
– If paid additional services (such as WiFi) cannot be utilized, passengers can request a refund.
Additionally, airlines are required to provide round-the-clock customer service support to ensure passengers can easily reach them at any time.
To ensure a smooth travel experience, it is recommended to understand passport validity requirements in advance and update them in a timely manner. In some countries, travelers may be denied boarding if their passport expires within the next three to six months. For instance,
– Several EU countries require a passport to have at least six months validity upon entry;
– When traveling to China, India, and other destinations, ensure there are enough blank pages in your passport.
Experts advise starting the renewal process at least one year before the passport expiration date to avoid disruptions to travel plans.
