On May 19th, a tourist bus traveling from Yilong, Sichuan to Shenzhen, encountered a mountain collision accident midway, resulting in 2 deaths and 2 severe injuries.
A video circulating online shows the roadside guardrail destroyed, the front of the tourist bus severely damaged with shattered windshield, and the words “Modern Transportation Group” written on the vehicle. Nearby, many passengers were seen waiting on the side of the road for transfer.
According to a report from the Traffic Police Detachment of Zhaoqing City Public Security Bureau in Guangdong Province, the tourist bus (sightseeing coach) was en route from Yilong, Sichuan to Longgang, Shenzhen. At 6 a.m. on the 19th, when passing a section of a highway within Zhaoqing, it crossed over the central divider and collided with the mountain, resulting in 2 deaths and 2 severe injuries.
As reported by Red Star News, it took firefighters 40 minutes to pry open the vehicle and transport the 2 severely injured individuals for medical treatment. Currently, their conditions are stable.
The report mentioned that the tourist bus belongs to the Modern Transportation Group in Nanchong, Sichuan, which has had two instances of speeding violations in the past three years. The vehicle involved in the accident had its annual inspection valid until April 2025, suggesting a possible lapse in inspection. Currently, all operational vehicles of the company have been suspended for inspection. The cause of the accident is under investigation.
Some netizens have raised concerns about possible driver fatigue. However, according to some netizens, there were three drivers taking turns to drive the tourist bus, and they had just changed drivers at a service area, ruling out driver fatigue. The accident occurred due to rainy and slippery conditions that led to a front tire burst, causing the bus to lose control. In order to ensure passenger safety, the driver chose to collide with the mountain. As a result, two of the three drivers died, and one was severely injured.
One netizen further revealed, “My colleague’s husband operates buses, and the driver was his cousin and younger cousin, both of whom are no longer with us. One of the drivers had three children.”
