In Hubei Province, Shiyan City, Wudangshan, the “Medicine King Valley Traditional Chinese Medicine Clinic” used the catchy slogan of “Anti-cancer Master, Cancer Treatment Secret, Cancer Healing Rate Over 80%…” to lure a large number of cancer patients to seek “treatment,” while some staff at the clinic lack qualifications. Over a period of more than a month, a total of 392 patients visited the clinic for treatment. According to statistics, among the current patients seeking treatment, 15 have passed away and 20 have seen their condition worsen.
In a report by The Beijing News on December 2, 2024, in February 2024, Wang Xiaobo was diagnosed with liver cancer during an examination at a hospital in Qingdao. His sister, Wang Xiaoying, mentioned that their family learned from a video on a social platform under the name “Wu Pengfei” that the Medicine King Valley Traditional Chinese Medicine Clinic at Wudangshan had a secret formula that could treat cancer.
In the short video, Wu Pengfei claimed to be the founder of the anti-cancer center at the clinic and praised the chief consultant, renowned Chinese medicine practitioner Hou Yuanxiang, as the “number one Chinese medicine cancer treatment expert in China.” With over 3,000 patients treated by Hou Yuanxiang, their tumors disappeared, and the registered names of patients who were cured exceeded 80%. It was claimed that “Hou Lao (Old Master Hou) is not like other Chinese medicine practitioners; he can cure this cancer but not that cancer.”
After watching the promotional video of the Medicine King Valley Traditional Chinese Medicine Clinic, Wang Xiaoying felt hopeful that her brother’s condition could be treated, stating, “The doctors there are very skilled; they can treat any type of cancer.” After discussing with her brother and sister-in-law, they decided to rush to the clinic to seize the opportunity for treatment before the clinic officially opened.
At the Medicine King Valley Traditional Chinese Medicine Clinic in Wudangshan, Shiyan City, regardless of the type of cancer, patients undergo a seven-day plum blossom acupuncture treatment first, followed by a traditional Chinese medicine pulse diagnosis to obtain the secret formula medication, which they are instructed to take at home according to the doctor’s instructions.
After signing the “Cancer Patient Informed Consent Commitment Letter” with the Medicine King Valley Traditional Chinese Medicine Clinic, Wang Xiaobo paid a fee of 18,620 yuan for the plum blossom acupuncture treatment and began a seven-day treatment course.
The “Commitment Letter” contained two main points: the patient’s basic information, including personal details, type of cancer, and stage of cancer; and the potential consequences of treatment, including recovery, ineffective treatment, worsening condition, or death. The family agreed to bear any of these outcomes and not hold the clinic liable for any reason.
Upon completing the plum blossom acupuncture treatment, patients moved on to the phase of traditional Chinese medicine pulse diagnosis and receiving the secret formula medication. There were three resident traditional Chinese medicine practitioners at Medicine King Valley, with treatment prices ranging from 16,900 yuan to 14,900 yuan.
Wang Xiaoying chose to have her brother treated by Dr. Li Hanyuan, the most renowned and expensive doctor at the clinic. Dr. Li Hanyuan, the head of the medical expert team at Medicine King Valley’s anti-cancer center, had successfully treated nearly a hundred patients. After a brief pulse diagnosis session of less than 5 minutes, Li Hanyuan directed Wang Xiaobo to another room to collect the secret formula medication from the “Anti-cancer Master” Hou Yuanxiang.
According to Wang Xiaoying, during the treatment process, no prescription was provided by the doctor. Despite paying for a month’s worth of medication, due to the high number of patients seeking treatment, the supply of the secret formula medication could not meet the demand. As a result, only half a month’s worth of medication was provided, with the promise that the remaining half would be sent by mail.
Upon returning to Qingdao from Wudangshan, Wang Xiaobo began experiencing severe symptoms such as diarrhea and weakness after following the doctor’s instructions to take the medication. When his family consulted the clinic staff about these issues over the phone, they were reassured that these were normal detoxification symptoms. After half a month of treatment, Wang Xiaobo lost five kilograms in weight. A subsequent examination at a formal hospital revealed ascites in the liver, leading to his passing.
Zou Li (pseudonym) from Jiangsu took her father, who was suffering from lung cancer, to the Medicine King Valley Traditional Chinese Medicine Clinic for treatment, undergoing a nearly identical treatment process as Wang Xiaobo. However, her father started coughing incessantly after taking the secret formula medication and passed away at home due to severe asthma symptoms over a month later.
Dong Jinsong from Chengde, Hebei, recalled how his wife, diagnosed with advanced lung adenocarcinoma, began experiencing constipation after taking the secret formula medication from Medicine King Valley, leading to a rapid spread and metastasis of the cancer cells. After 13 days of medication, ineffective treatment efforts led to her passing on September 28.
Lu Rui from Yan’an, Shaanxi, watched helplessly as his wife battled cervical cancer. After starting the secret formula medication on April 19, she began experiencing stomach pain, nausea, and loss of appetite within two days. Weakness and inability to move followed a week later, leading to a hospital visit 25 days after starting the medication, only to find that the tumor had grown, with cancer cells spreading to the bladder. She succumbed to multiple organ failure on September 26.
In response to continuous reports from patients and their families, the Wudangshan Tourism Economic Special Zone Market Supervision Bureau and Health Commission began investigating the situation. Following a review, the Market Supervision Bureau concluded that the implicated Traditional Chinese Medicine clinic was suspected of criminal activities, leading to a criminal investigation being initiated.
Reports indicated that patients experienced nearly identical physical reactions after consuming the “secret formula medication,” including fatigue, loss of appetite, diarrhea, constipation, coughing up blood, and vomiting.
According to the investigation and statistics by the Wudangshan Tourism Economic Special Zone Health Commission, the Medicine King Valley Traditional Chinese Medicine Clinic operated from April 18 to May 31 this year, receiving a total of 392 patients seeking treatment. Information provided by patients or their families, including Wang Xiaoying’s brother among them, revealed that 15 patients have passed away, and 20 saw their conditions worsen. Among them, one person passed away ten days after taking the secret formula medication, while fourteen others passed away within one to six months after starting the treatment.
Information from “Tianyancha” showed that the Shiyan Medicine King Valley Chinese Medicine Hospital Co., Ltd., was established in December 2022 with a registered capital of 100,000 yuan, with Wang Shaojun as the legal representative. The registered address is at Yipinyuan Village, Sanqiao Street, Wudangshan Special Zone in Shiyan City, and the business scope includes services such as traditional Chinese medicine clinics, traditional Chinese health care services (non-medical), and acquisition of Chinese herbal medicines.
Wang Shaojun clarified that he was only a nominal legal representative of the Medicine King Valley Chinese Medicine Clinic and was not involved in any specific matters. The capital owner was a person named Mei Xin, who was a friend and invited Wang Shaojun to be the legal representative. Mei Xin mentioned that he was not the capital owner but rather a business operations employee, and suggested that inquiries about specific matters should be directed to the responsible person, Wang Shaojun. He further revealed that Wu Pengfei was responsible for promoting the Chinese medicine clinic.
On November 11, Ren Guobin, head of the Wudangshan Tourism Economic Special Zone Market Supervision Bureau, mentioned that after receiving online feedback on May 24 regarding the situation at the Medicine King Valley Chinese Medicine Clinic, a dedicated team comprising various departments under the guidance of the Special Zone Management Committee was formed to address the issue.
However, Wang Xiaoying, a family member of a patient, stated that while the Medicine King Valley Chinese Medicine Clinic had been under investigation, no individuals implicated in the case had been apprehended to date.
