A recent study by the renowned financial technology firm MoneyLion has analyzed the cost of attending some of the most expensive colleges in the United States. According to their findings, for the academic year 2024-2025, the University of Southern California and Pepperdine University, both located in California, lead the rankings with total attendance costs exceeding $95,000 for on-campus students. This makes them the two most expensive universities in the nation, notably without any Ivy League schools appearing in the top ten.
To compile this ranking, MoneyLion reviewed available data, including figures provided by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) and the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS). They assessed the total costs for on-campus students for the years spanning from 2020-2021 to 2024-2025, helping to identify the most costly institutions across the United States.
The study tracked significant changes in several key financial metrics, such as total costs for on-campus students as well as variations in tuition and fees from 2021 to 2025. By organizing schools based on their total attendance costs for the 2024-2025 academic year, MoneyLion aimed to provide an informed look at the current state of college expenses.
The analysis revealed that the University of Southern California has a total attendance cost of $95,234, while Pepperdine University follows closely behind at $95,168 for the same academic year. Since the 2020-2021 school year, the total cost at USC has risen by 19%, and at Pepperdine, it has increased by 22%.
Among the fifty highest-cost schools nationwide, eleven are located in California. The list includes not only the top two institutions but also Harvey Mudd College (9th), Stanford University (11th), Claremont McKenna College (25th), Scripps College (32nd), California Institute of Technology (33rd), Oakland campus of Northeastern University (41st), Loyola Marymount University (42nd), Pitzer College (43rd), and Pomona College (50th).
In fact, within this group of fifty colleges, 41 institutions have annual attendance costs exceeding $90,000 for students who opt for on-campus housing. The remaining nine schools each have attendance costs above $89,000.
Comparing data from the 2020-2021 academic year, the total costs for attending the Oakland campus of Northeastern University surged by a staggering 85%. The total cost, reported as $48,732 during the earlier academic year, has risen to an astonishing $90,158 in the 2024-2025 figures. Additionally, there has been a dramatic 120% increase in tuition and related fees during the same period.
While it’s commonly perceived that prestigious universities carry exorbitant attendance fees, it’s notable that none of the Ivy League schools appeared in the top ten of this ranking. Specifically, both Harvard University and Princeton University did not make it into the list of the fifty most expensive colleges.
However, several Ivy League institutions are included further down the list. Columbia University ranks 14th, followed by the University of Pennsylvania in 15th, Cornell University at 17th, Yale University at 20th, Brown University at 23rd, and Dartmouth College at 26th.
This discrepancy arises from the fact that the “sticker price” of college does not necessarily reflect the actual costs incurred by students. American universities, particularly well-known private institutions, often have robust financial aid and scholarship systems.
The absence of top-tier schools like Harvard and Princeton in MoneyLion’s list of the most expensive universities is not indicative of low tuition rates. Rather, these elite institutions benefit from substantial endowments that allow them to offer generous “Need-Blind” financial aid packages. For many students from low- to middle-income families, attending schools like Harvard can result in expenses that are lower than those incurred at local public universities.
