AstraZeneca’s Japanese Executive Detained by Chinese Communist Party, Expected to be Released in December

On Saturday, November 7, a report from Japan’s Kyodo News indicated that a Japanese employee of Astellas Pharma Inc. is expected to be released from a Chinese prison in December.

This individual, now in his sixties, was detained by Chinese authorities in March 2023. In July 2025, the Beijing Second Intermediate People’s Court sentenced him to three years and six months in prison on charges of espionage activities.

Sources familiar with Japan-China relations disclosed that this man will serve the entirety of his sentence, which includes the time he spent in detention before the verdict was handed down. Upon his release, he is anticipated to return directly to Japan.

It has been reported that the man was detained just before he intended to return to Japan, raising questions about the circumstances of his arrest.

A Japanese diplomat who attended the trial noted that they were unable to disclose further details of the verdict at the request of the defendant.

Other insiders revealed that the man had opted for a guilty plea after being informed by the Chinese authorities that cooperating by admitting guilt could result in a lighter sentence.

Prior to his detention, this man held an executive position at Astellas Pharma’s China branch and also served as a senior official at the Japan Chamber of Commerce and Industry in China.

Earlier this year, two Japanese employees from Fuji Electric Co., Ltd. were detained in China for allegedly attempting to smuggle rare earth-related products overseas. This incident followed Beijing’s tightening of controls on dual-use items, including those related to rare earth materials, which have applications in both civilian and military sectors.

The Japanese government subsequently confirmed that the two employees were detained in May in Dalian, a northeastern port city, on charges of violating laws prohibiting the smuggling of banned goods in and out of the country. However, further details were withheld for privacy reasons.

This series of incidents highlights ongoing tensions in Japan-China relations, particularly regarding business operations and legal challenges faced by foreign nationals in China. The cases have raised concerns about the implications for Japanese companies operating in the region, particularly in sensitive sectors such as pharmaceuticals and technology.

The diplomatic community remains vigilant in assessing the developments, as they could have significant ramifications for international business relations and the safety of foreign workers in China.
