This week, Allie Tong, a well-known food influencer from San Francisco, along with her assistant, ventured to shoot a restaurant review outside a café located in the Cow Hollow area. What was intended to be a simple promotion for a local business quickly escalated into an unexpected street confrontation.
On Tuesday afternoon, reports indicated that Tong and her assistant were filming in a small pedestrian park outside Wrecking Ball Coffee. Although their camera was not aimed at a middle-aged couple sitting on the sidewalk enjoying their coffee, the male of the pair inexplicably directed aggression towards Tong’s assistant. He not only glared at the assistant but also shook his head persistently while muttering insults such as, “You bunch of damned idiots.”
Noticing the unusual tension, Tong approached the scene while her assistant, in an effort to protect themselves, began recording the altercation with a smartphone. The assistant boldly questioned the man, asking if he dared to repeat his previous remarks. As the situation began to spiral out of control, the man’s female companion suddenly lost her composure and lunged towards the assistant, attempting to knock the phone out of their hand.
In the video, a heated verbal exchange can be heard, with the assistant backing away while holding a coffee cup. They shouted, “Don’t touch me!” and “Stay away from me!” while seeking help from passersby, explaining, “We were just taking pictures, and they are harassing us for no reason.” During the scuffle, the assistant sustained scratches to their chest, and the woman forcefully grabbed the assistant’s sunglasses.
When confronted by Tong and her assistant, the woman maintained a confrontational stance. Not only did she demand the deletion of the footage, but she also brandished the stolen sunglasses, tauntingly challenging, “Do you want this? Go ahead, call the police! We’re calling the police right now!” Following this, she and the man turned and left the scene.
In the aftermath, the assistant filed a police report on October 28. Tong subsequently shared footage of the confrontation on her TikTok and Instagram accounts, which collectively have around 160,000 followers, in hopes of enlisting the public’s help in identifying the couple involved. The video quickly gained traction, amassing thousands of views and generating widespread discussion.
Simultaneously, Wrecking Ball Coffee released an immediate response, commending Tong for her ongoing promotion of local businesses, and announced a decisive measure to blacklist the couple, permanently banning them from returning.
As netizens began to identify the individuals involved, Tong released a second video urging the public to remain calm and refrain from doxxing or engaging in vigilante justice. She clarified that the intention behind sharing the footage was not to seek revenge but to ensure that such blatant harassment and physical aggression in public spaces would not be trivialized or justified. “We never retaliated; we just hope that no other innocent person will have to experience this terrifying situation,” she emphasized.
