The President of the Republic of China, Lai Ching-te, recently addressed the importance of shared values between Taiwan and Japan, particularly in the realms of freedom and democracy. As the international landscape continues to shift rapidly, he emphasized that cooperation between Taiwan and Japan is essential for enhancing the well-being of both nations and their people. Looking forward, he hopes for the continued deepening of local and civil exchanges, as well as the expansion of collaborations across diverse fields. His goal is to bolster and solidify the friendship between Taiwan and Japan.
In a recorded speech for the 12th Taiwan-Japan Exchange Summit held in Nagoya, Lai articulated the strong emotional ties that exist between the peoples of Taiwan and Japan. He noted that in this ever-changing global environment, only through collaboration and mutual support can both countries safeguard their democracy, peace, and prosperity. He expressed an optimistic outlook for the future, emphasizing the importance of furthering local and civil exchanges, which he believes will lead to a more profound and stable friendship.
On the afternoon of November 2, President Lai recorded his speech for this significant summit. He began by extending his warmest greetings and blessings to all the friends participating in the event.
During his address, Lai specifically thanked the former president of the National Taiwan-Japan Friendship Parliamentary Alliance, Kazuhide Fujita. He commended Fujita for his long-standing efforts to promote local council exchanges between Taiwan and Japan, as these initiatives have made the Taiwan-Japan Exchange Summit a vital platform for fostering friendship and deepening cooperation.
Lai noted that this year, under the leadership of the newly appointed president, Masato Yokoyama, Fujita has passed the torch and continues to personally lead the Nagoya team in organizing the 12th summit. “This consistent support for Taiwan and the profound friendship we share have profoundly touched and inspired us,” Lai remarked.
Alongside congratulating Yokoyama on his new role, Lai conveyed his hopes for the continuity of local exchanges under Yokoyama’s guidance, looking forward to the creation of more fruitful collaborations that would further solidify the Taiwan-Japan friendship.
Lai highlighted that Aichi Prefecture and Nagoya City embody a blend of tradition and innovation. After successfully hosting the Asian Games and the Asian Para Games, it was only fitting that this summit be held in Nagoya. In a unique twist, the event incorporated the well-loved “Taichung Night Market” activities, allowing many to explore and appreciate Taiwanese culture through food and city engagement. He commended the organizing team’s meticulous efforts and dedication, expressing his admiration.
Furthermore, Lai took this opportunity to express gratitude to all friends who value and support the Taiwan-Japan relationship. Both nations, situated along the first island chain, share the same values of freedom and democracy. They also face common challenges such as natural disasters and the expansion of authoritarianism. The profound emotional connection between the two peoples symbolizes a shared destiny.
Lai asserted that in light of the rapidly changing international environment, only through united efforts can Taiwan and Japan enhance the welfare of their citizens and protect the core principles of democracy, peace, and prosperity that are essential to their coexistence.
Looking to the future, Lai expressed eagerness for the Taiwan-Japan collaboration to strengthen through grassroots involvement, advancing exchanges across various fields. He aspires for the friendly relations between Taiwan and Japan to become a prime example of democratic partners moving forward hand in hand.
