German police said on Sunday they were investigating an incident of illegal intrusion at Leipzig/Halle Airport. A vehicle was suspected to have breached the airport perimeter fence and entered the restricted area. This marks the second security breach at the airport this year.
After receiving a report late Saturday night, authorities immediately launched an investigation into the incident. Police officers were still on site on Sunday conducting searches for relevant clues. A large breach was found in a section of the wire fence and barbed wire perimeter surrounding the airport. Authorities are inspecting the surrounding areas of the fence to determine if anyone illegally entered the airport.
Leipzig police previously stated that no suspicious items or unauthorized individuals had been found yet, but further searches would be conducted.
An airport spokesperson mentioned that one runway is currently closed, but passenger traffic on Sunday was operating as usual and has not been significantly affected.
This incident has raised concerns about airport security among the public. In August of this year, investigators discovered a drone carrying explosives near a Ukrainian Antonov cargo plane on the airport runway.
German officials have attributed responsibility for the incident to Russia. As a result, Germany has closed the Russian consulate and Russian cultural center in Berlin. However, Russia has denied any involvement in the allegations.
Currently, authorities are still investigating this suspected intrusion incident and have not disclosed if it is related to the drone incident from August.
