On Saturday, October 17th, a serious accident occurred at a military base in Alberta, Canada, triggering a large fire that resulted in multiple casualties. The Canadian Prime Minister and Minister of Defense confirmed the incident and casualties but have not disclosed the exact number of casualties or the cause of the fire.
The incident took place at the Wainwright Base, located approximately 210 kilometers east of the provincial capital Edmonton, known as one of Canada’s busiest army training bases.
According to the Canadian Department of Defense, the fire broke out around 4 p.m. local time within the training area of the base, quickly spreading beyond the training area. Military and civilian emergency service personnel were dispatched to the scene to control the fire and assist those affected.
Prime Minister Carney took to social media on Saturday to acknowledge the serious accident that led to the large fire, stating that the federal government is “closely collaborating with the Alberta provincial government and local authorities.”
Defense Minister McGuinty held a press conference on Saturday in Ottawa, confirming the occurrence of a serious fire following the accident at the base which resulted in casualties. However, specific casualty numbers and the initial cause of the fire were not disclosed; the Royal Canadian Mounted Police are involved in the investigation. McGuinty described the current situation as evolving and sensitive, with authorities investigating the incident.
The Canadian Armed Forces announced that they would not disclose specific casualty numbers before notifying the families of the deceased and injured.
Edmonton has declared a “Code Orange” mass casualty response mechanism to handle the multiple injured individuals being sent from the base. Authorities have urged local residents to stay away from the accident site, keep roads clear, and advised non-emergency patients to avoid heading to the emergency department of the University of Alberta Hospital.
According to CBC reports, Dr. Warren Thirsk at the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Edmonton described the incident as a “disaster that occurs only once every 15 to 25 years.” Medical facilities in Wainwright are said to be overwhelmed, and the injured are being transferred to various hospitals in Edmonton.
Alberta Premier Danielle Smith described the accident as “significant and mournful,” noting its impact on many brave military personnel.
Opposition leader Pierre Poilievre also reached out on social media, stating that he had spoken with McGuinty and Prime Minister Carney regarding the fire, expressing gratitude to emergency responders. He ended by asking for everyone to pray for Wainwright.
The base where the accident occurred is a crucial training ground for the Canadian Army. As of the 2021 census data, the base housed 1,310 military and civilian personnel; the nearby town of Wainwright, with a population of around 6,600, lies just north of the base.
The Wainwright municipal district posted on social media that the fire had crossed the base perimeter and spread to nearby areas, but evacuation orders had not been issued.
Late on Saturday night, local authorities reported that the fire was “currently under control and not spreading,” with firefighters continuing to monitor the situation on-site.
On Sunday, October 18th, NATO Military Committee Chairman Admiral Giuseppe Cavo Dragone extended condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in the Alberta military base accident, emphasizing solidarity with the Canadian Armed Forces from all 32 alliance member defense chiefs.
