Crazy Rich Asians to be Adapted into TV Series, Starring Michelle Yeoh and Others

HBO recently announced that they will be releasing a sequel TV series to the hit movie “Crazy Rich Asians,” starring Constance Wu, Henry Golding, Ronny Chieng, and Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh.

In 2018, the film “Crazy Rich Asians,” directed by Jon M. Chu, was released. This modern-day Cinderella story captivated audiences worldwide, earning over $238 million at the box office and becoming the highest-grossing romantic comedy of the 2010s. It even became a must-watch movie for many during flights.

This romantic comedy, featuring a predominantly Asian cast including Constance Wu, Henry Golding, Ronny Chieng, and Michelle Yeoh, received two Golden Globe nominations, three NAACP Image Awards nominations, four Critics’ Choice Awards nominations, and one Screen Actors Guild Award nomination.

Director Jon M. Chu revealed that audiences have been eagerly anticipating a sequel since the release of the original film.

“After eight years, I can finally answer the question I’ve been asked almost every day: ‘When is the sequel coming out?’ Well… we’re back!” Chu announced in the official series announcement.

He went on to say, “Eight years ago, ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ changed my life. I had the privilege of working with some of the most creative and humorous people I’ve ever known. Seeing the audience integrate this film into their lives – from hosting mahjong nights to making it their inflight movie of choice – has been amazing. I can’t wait to share the next chapter with everyone.”

Here’s everything you need to know about the upcoming “Crazy Rich Asians” series set to debut on HBO.

The eight-episode HBO series will continue the storyline from the film. In the movie, Rachel Chu (played by Constance Wu) accompanies her boyfriend Nick Young (played by Henry Golding) to Southeast Asia for a wedding, where she experiences the extreme wealth of Nick’s family for the first time. Nick’s mother Eleanor (played by Michelle Yeoh) is determined to uncover Rachel’s past, creating a rift between them. However, Eleanor eventually accepts their relationship when she realizes Rachel does not force Nick to choose between her and his mother. Nick then proposes to Rachel with his mother’s ring. As a direct sequel to the movie, this romantic series will undoubtedly continue these conflicts and showcase the challenges Nick and Rachel face after starting their life together.

The 2018 film “Crazy Rich Asians” was adapted from Kevin Kwan’s bestselling novel released in 2013. Kwan later released two sequels: “China Rich Girlfriend” in 2015 and “Rich People Problems” in 2017. Therefore, this HBO series is likely to draw inspiration from these storylines.

Adele Lim, one of the film’s screenwriters, will serve as the showrunner and executive producer of the series, alongside Kevin Kwan, Nina Jacobson, Brad Simpson, and film director Jon M. Chu. The series will be a collaborative effort between HBO and Warner Bros. Television.

Jacobson and Simpson expressed their excitement about reuniting with their exceptional partners to create a series that continues the storyline from the film. As producers, they are thrilled to finally have an answer to the frequently asked question of when more of “Crazy Rich Asians” will be seen.

Several familiar faces from the film will return to reprise their roles on screen, including Constance Wu, Henry Golding, Ronny Chieng, and Michelle Yeoh.

However, it is currently unclear if Gemma Chan, who portrayed Nick’s cousin Astrid in the movie, will return. There have been rumors that the sequel may focus on Astrid and her new love interest Charlie Wu (played by Harry Shum Jr. from “Glee”).

Stay tuned for updates to see if they will be part of the series.

The premiere date for the series is yet to be confirmed, but reports suggest that production will commence in 2027.
