As part of a broader corporate restructuring plan, Starbucks announced on September 23rd and 24th that it will upgrade at least 1,500 stores in the United States and Canada during the 2026 fiscal year. Simultaneously, the coffee giant will close 250 stores within its network of over 18,000 locations in North America, with 36 closures confirmed in Southern California.
Starting from the end of 2025, Starbucks has already completed upgrades to thousands of stores in the US and Canada. The renovations bring in more comfortable seating, exquisite artwork, green plants, and design elements that incorporate local characteristics, all aimed at enticing customers to linger longer and feel at home.
In Beverly Hills, the revamped Starbucks store at the intersection of Wilshire Blvd and Santa Monica Blvd underwent a transformation that involved repainting brick walls to showcase art pieces, incorporating the brand’s signature green throughout the space. Additionally, the store features carpets, plush seating, and velvet curtains to soften the industrial-style architecture.
As part of the “Back to Starbucks” initiative, the company tested new store designs in Southern California and New York before rolling them out in other cities. Each new design will be tailored to reflect the unique characteristics of the local communities.
While most stores undergo upgrades, approximately 1% of stores will be closed. Chief Operating Officer Mike Grams explained that closures are a result of stores failing to meet Starbucks’ financial expectations or provide the desired customer experience. The decision to close stores was made after evaluating operational performance.
Over the past few months, Starbucks has closed over 600 stores in North America and Europe, leading to the elimination of hundreds of non-retail positions. The company has pledged to support affected employees by offering position adjustments or severance packages.
According to the Los Angeles Times, the closed Starbucks stores in Southern California have been removed from the Starbucks app. Among the 36 closures, 19 were in Los Angeles County, with 6 in Orange County and San Diego County each. On Google Maps, 32 stores are listed as permanently closed, while 4 are still in operation, with closure proceedings likely initiated before the official announcement.
