On Tuesday, September 28th, a Russian strategic bomber with nuclear strike capability crashed while carrying out a training mission in the Far East region, resulting in the deaths of 6 crew members, as announced by the Russian Ministry of Defense.
According to reports from the Associated Press, the Russian Ministry of Defense stated in a release that the Tu-95 bomber crashed in a remote area in Amur Oblast; the statement also mentioned that one crew member survived and is currently hospitalized for treatment of injuries.
The statement indicated that the bomber was not carrying any weapons at the time of the crash. The Ministry of Defense mentioned that an investigation team has been dispatched to the scene to determine the cause of the crash.
Local government officials stated in a release that the aircraft went down near the village of Krasnoyarovo, located close to the Zeya River near the Chinese border. The statement noted that the pilot “made every effort to maneuver the aircraft away from residential areas.”
The Tu-95 is a four-engine turboprop strategic bomber with nuclear strike capability that has been in service since the Cold War era. During more than four and a half years of ongoing conflicts, the Russian military extensively utilized these large aircraft, launching conventional cruise missiles towards Ukraine.
In June 2025, Ukraine carried out an operation codenamed “Spiderweb,” using drones secretly launched from trucks to attack Russian air force bases where long-range bombers were stationed, resulting in the destruction or damage of some Tu-95 bombers within Russian territory.
