A heroic act unfolded on the side of Highway 114 in Southlake, Texas, near Dallas. Officer Joshua Swisher was in the midst of issuing a traffic citation when a situation turned critical. Just as static crackled over the police radio, he spotted a wisp of oily smoke. Without hesitation, he abandoned his paperwork and saw a sedan driving past his patrol car, emitting gray exhaust against the setting sun.
Taking swift action, Swisher abandoned the traffic stop in front of him and pursued the smoking vehicle. The officer motioned for the car to pull over near the 900 block of the east segment of Highway 114. Shortly after both vehicles came to a stop, orange flames licked the ground, spiraling out from under the Nissan Altima sedan.
Swisher loudly instructed the driver to exit the vehicle. However, the door handle was broken, and the window only partially rolled down, allowing smoke to seep out. Despite the challenges, Swisher managed to break the glass, creating an escape route for the driver. He then reached through the smoke, grabbed the driver’s arm, and pulled him out through the window before dragging him to the roadside.
After ensuring there were no other occupants in the burning car, Swisher reported over the radio that the driver was safe. The entire rescue operation took less than 20 seconds, unbeknownst to the hundreds of afternoon commuters passing by on Highway 114, unaware of the dramatic events unfolding just feet away.
The Nissan Altima was engulfed in flames, its cause still under investigation. Fortunately, both individuals emerged unharmed from the ordeal. While the driver reunited with his family unscathed, Swisher sustained minor burns on his arm and had his uniform sleeve singed.
In the following weeks, the Southlake Public Safety Department released footage from the dashcam and body camera online. The video quickly gained attention on social media, highlighting how rapidly the situation escalated. The local online community used the video as a reminder of the unpredictability and dangers officers face during routine law enforcement activities.
In recognition of his courageous rescue, Swisher was awarded the “Meritorious Conduct Award,” the department’s second-highest honor. “Our officers are always prepared for the unexpected moments that can happen in an instant,” said Ashley Casey, Police Chief of the Southlake Public Safety Department. She emphasized that Swisher’s selfless actions epitomized the department’s values and ethos.
Despite the accolades online, Swisher remained humble, stating any officer in his department would have made the same choice.
