New York City Police Commissioner Tysh announced on Friday (August 28) that the NYPD, in conjunction with the Federal Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) in New York and New Jersey among other anti-drug task forces, has successfully dismantled a large-scale drug trafficking group spanning multiple states. Authorities intercepted a staggering 580 pounds (approximately 263 kilograms) of cocaine, with an estimated street value of up to $10 million.
This marks the largest single cocaine seizure in terms of both monetary value and quantity in the past decade for the NYPD. According to details released by the NYPD, this extensive joint law enforcement operation involved months of tracking and intelligence gathering. Investigators targeted a sophisticated drug supply chain spanning New York and New Jersey.
During multiple search operations, law enforcement seized over 580 pounds of cocaine, $170,000 in cash, and a cache of firearms. The estimated value of these seized drugs, if they had made their way into New York City and surrounding areas, would have exceeded tens of millions of dollars.
Tysh stated that the drug network had been systematically funneling large quantities of drugs into the New York metropolitan area, posing a severe threat to community safety. He emphasized, “This operation has effectively dismantled a major cross-state drug trafficking channel, successfully intercepting this batch of drugs before they hit our streets.”
While authorities have not disclosed specific details regarding the individuals involved or the number of arrests made, this operation is viewed as a significant victory in law enforcement’s efforts to combat drug crimes in the greater New York area.
