On a late night in January 2025, Zeke Fox, a senior student at Cathedral High School in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, will never forget the night he saved a man’s life. Driving his parents’ Dodge Caravan back from a friend’s house, Fox encountered a scene of black smoke and a pungent, toxic odor near Bayfront Park that shattered the peaceful night.
Immediately realizing it was more than just a regular bonfire, Fox parked at Hutch’s restaurant’s gravel lot, rolled down his windows, turned on his high beams, and scanned the darkness for the source. It was then he heard a cry for help three times. Following the sound, he saw a makeshift tent covered in orange tarp emitting smoke and flames. Trusting his instincts, Fox approached the tent, which soon burst into flames just five feet away from him.
As the tent quickly became engulfed in fire, Fox didn’t hesitate to spring into action. Despite the intense heat and smoke hindering his vision, he spotted Shawn Goodwin trapped inside about 5 to 10 feet from the entrance. With sheer determination, Fox managed to pull Goodwin out of the tent and onto the snowy ground even as flames surrounded them.
Exhausted and coughing, Fox knelt beside a silent Goodwin, waiting for help to arrive. Goodwin, who suffered severe burns, was eventually rushed to the hospital for immediate treatment. Although Fox’s physical injuries healed, the emotional scars of that fateful night lingered, leading to post-traumatic stress and recurrent nightmares.
Understanding Goodwin’s struggles led Fox to become a regular visitor at the hospital, trying to come to terms with the traumatic event. Despite the challenges faced by both Fox and Goodwin, their bond grew stronger as they navigated the aftermath of the fire incident.
Acknowledged as a hero by the media, Fox grappled with the impact of his actions and sought solace through therapy and hospital visits. His selfless act garnered widespread recognition, culminating in the prestigious Carnegie Medal for individuals who risk their lives to save others. The award not only validated Fox’s character but also inspired him to pursue a career in law enforcement.
