In response to the reckless driving of electric bicycles (E-bikes) and micro-mobility vehicles on the streets of New York City, the New York City Police Department (NYPD) has unleashed an unprecedented crackdown this year. The latest official statistics show that the number of violation tickets and confiscated vehicles issued by the police in the first eight months of 2026 has surged, demonstrating the city government’s determination to overhaul traffic order.
According to the latest traffic enforcement report released by the NYPD, as of the end of August this year, the number of tickets issued to E-bike riders for traffic violations such as running red lights, driving in the opposite direction, and riding on sidewalks has increased by 55% compared to the same period in 2025.
The police have confiscated and impounded 973 illegal or non-compliant E-bikes in all five boroughs of the city this year, more than double the 415 seized during the same period last year, representing a growth of over 134%.
Officials from the traffic bureau under the NYPD pointed out that this large-scale enforcement operation mainly focused on busy commercial areas, sections with a high concentration of delivery workers, and communities where sidewalk violations reported by residents were most severe.
The police and traffic safety advocacy groups have highlighted that with the increasing popularity of E-bikes in recent years, related traffic hazards have become more serious.
Some riders engage in dangerous behaviors such as speeding on sidewalks and driving in the opposite direction to deliver orders quickly, posing significant collision risks to the elderly and children.
Accident data from the police indicates a noticeable increase in severe and fatal crashes involving E-bikes and micro-mobility vehicles compared to previous years.
The NYPD stated that they will maintain a high-intensity enforcement posture in the coming months, urging all E-bike users (including private riders and delivery workers) to strictly adhere to traffic regulations: E-bikes must travel in lanes or designated bike lanes; riding against the flow of traffic is strictly prohibited, and riders must obey traffic signals like regular vehicles; commercial delivery workers and 16-17-year-old teen riders must wear approved helmets as required by law.
The police emphasized that the ultimate goal of enforcement is not punishment but to establish road safety awareness through strict enforcement, providing New York City residents with a safe public space for walking and commuting.
