Due to the impact of Typhoon No. 13 “Beluga”, on August 9, Shanghai experienced heavy rainfall across the city, leading to waterlogging in many areas. In particular, a sinking square in a shopping mall in Changning District was inundated by rainwater, resulting in severe flooding in the commercial shops and parking area spread across three underground floors.
Shanghai netizens shared videos showing Changning International Plaza being flooded with water rising to approximately knee-high levels. Areas such as Xuhui Qingzhou North Road, Zhongshan Park, Xing’an Road, Wukang Road, and Pudong also experienced extensive waterlogging, forcing pedestrians and vehicles to wade through the water.
A shop owner at Changning International Plaza told “Look Around News” that the typhoon came too fiercely this time, with a strong current pushing all the benches and tables in front of the shops, stating, “In the over ten years I’ve been in Shanghai, this is the first time experiencing such a situation.”
According to the property management, the flooding mainly concentrated in the commercial and parking areas across three underground floors of the shopping mall.
Reports indicated that by 10 p.m. that day, the indoor flooding at the shopping mall had been drained, and comprehensive disinfection was needed for all water passage areas within the mall.
At 10:54 a.m. on August 10, the Shanghai Meteorological Center updated the yellow alert for heavy rain in the central urban area to an orange alert: it is expected that within the next 12 hours, the accumulated rainfall in the central urban area will exceed 150 millimeters in 6 hours, with heavy rainfall likely causing urban waterlogging and traffic congestion.
Around 11 a.m. on the 10th, the typhoon’s path showed that the typhoon was still within Zhejiang province, but the stronger spiral rain bands on the northern side continued to affect Shanghai.
