Republican Senator Mitch McConnell from Kentucky in the United States announced on Thursday that he has been discharged from the rehabilitation center and will continue his recovery at home. McConnell had been absent from Senate voting activities since mid-June when he fell and was hospitalized.
In a statement, McConnell expressed his gratitude to friends, colleagues, the people of Kentucky, as well as medical staff for the support and care he received during his time at the rehabilitation center. He mentioned that during the upcoming Senate state work period, he will undergo physical therapy at home and continue handling important Senate matters with his staff and colleagues.
The 84-year-old former Senate Majority Leader disclosed in July the reasons behind his recent absence from Senate votes, attributing it to complications from a fall related to residual effects from childhood polio, which caused him to briefly lose consciousness and later develop mild pneumonia during his recovery.
McConnell assured the public that he does not have any serious health issues such as fractures, concussions, heart attacks, strokes, tumors, or bleeding, but he is still unable to return to work at the Capitol building. Following the unexpected passing of Republican Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina due to a heart attack, the temporary vacancy in the Senate weakened the Republican Party’s majority, possibly prompting McConnell to reveal his current situation.
Amid calls from some Democrats for McConnell to disclose more health details and a timeline for his return to work, including from Kentucky Democratic Governor Andy Beshear, tensions have risen regarding McConnell’s fitness for his role as a Senator. Beshear had previously urged McConnell to prove his ability to carry out his duties or consider resignation in late July.
The health condition of McConnell, a prominent figure in American politics, has raised concerns about the impact on Senate operations and the potential shift in power dynamics within the chamber.
