On the morning of August 4th, a sinkhole appeared on the Binhai Avenue in Shenzhen, occupying two lanes of the main road. The incident took place near the construction site of the Guangzhou-Dongguan-Shenzhen Intercity Railway.
According to mainland Chinese media including Southern Metropolis Daily, the incident occurred around 9 a.m. in the westbound direction of Binhai Avenue, close to the Shahe Interchange, near the north slope of Shenzhen Bay Park. Photos from the scene show a massive sinkhole occupying two lanes, with construction workers using barriers to seal off the area for emergency repairs.
Due to the impact, initially only one lane of the road was open, leading to a traffic jam stretching nearly 2.5 kilometers. Subsequently, all five lanes of the main road were closed, forcing vehicles to divert to alternative routes for passage.
Reported by Shenzhen Evening News, the sunken section is in proximity to the construction site of the Guangzhou-Dongguan-Shenzhen Intercity Railway, which serves as a rapid rail transportation backbone connecting Guangzhou, Dongguan, and Shenzhen.
On that day, Shenzhen Metro announced that around 9 a.m. on August 4th, a ground subsidence was discovered near the Shahe Interchange on Binhai Avenue in the westbound direction. Fortunately, the incident did not result in any casualties or property damage. Currently, traffic controls have been implemented in the surrounding area, and investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of the subsidence.
