On June 17, 2026, the production qualifications of 8 well-established Chinese car manufacturers, including FAW Xiali, Huachen Auto, Zotye, Leopaard, Lifan, Huatai, BAIC Yinxiang (Senova), and Soueast Motor, have been permanently revoked, effectively eliminating them from the industry. This decision was announced in the 408th batch of the “Announcement of Road Motor Vehicle Manufacturing Enterprises and Products” by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of the Chinese Communist Party.
Following the revocation of their qualifications, these 8 companies no longer possess the legal rights to produce complete vehicles. Currently, their production lines have ceased operation and have been sealed off. From a compliance and legal standpoint, their entire vehicle manufacturing business has come to a substantial end.
Huachen Auto solely refers to the independent passenger car business under the Huachen Group, excluding its joint venture segment with BMW, which remains unaffected. Soueast Motor specifically denotes the main entity for traditional domestic passenger car production under Soueast, with the company itself not deregistered; its current focus has shifted toward overseas exports and the commercial vehicle sector.
These 8 companies have long been in a state of discontinued or partially suspended production, with output levels consistently failing to meet national access standards. Some of the enterprises have already undergone bankruptcy reorganization, representing long-term idle and inefficient production capacity within the industry.
Nearly encompassing a significant part of the Chinese era of gasoline-powered vehicles, these 8 enterprises have been iconic local brands. FAW Xiali was once synonymous with the “national family sedan,” leading in sales for 18 consecutive years, serving as a staple model for early taxi and personal transportation, with peak annual sales exceeding 253,000 units in 2011.
Zotye gained market traction through imitation design and low-cost strategies, achieving annual sales of 330,000 vehicles in 2016. Leopaard Motors, originating from a military background, dominated the official and off-road vehicle markets with its rugged off-road vehicles. Lifan, transitioning from the “King of Chinese Motorcycles,” represented a typical example of the early development of private car manufacturers.
Throughout different periods, these companies held significant market shares. On June 17, the topic labeled “8 well-established car manufacturers permanently exiting the market” trended on Weibo, eliciting emotional responses from numerous netizens.
Founder of “Fat Brother Auto Channel,” Fat Brother Yang Li, lamented, “As someone who has experienced these brands, seeing these names vanish is truly saddening.”
Weibo influencer “Car Master” remarked, “What is most lamentable is not the collapse of these enterprises, but the fact that these names once truly shined… Behind the exit of these 8 car manufacturers lies a profound evolution occurring within the Chinese automotive industry. In the coming years, the elimination process may continue, but it is this process of survival of the fittest that propels the entire industry forward.”
Automotive commentator and Weibo influencer “Wanted: Auto Expert” expressed, “Xiali, Zotye, and other old car manufacturers we often heard about have now completely exited the stage. They relied on low-cost strategies in the past, lacking solid technical foundations; unable to keep up with the rise of new energy vehicles, they were inevitably phased out by the market. The industry reshuffling is becoming more intense, and laziness and shortcuts in car manufacturing are no longer viable.”
Digital technology blogger and Weibo influencer “Awen Appraisal” stated, “I believe that even those who are not car enthusiasts must have heard of these names, indicating that they too have had their moments of glory, and their current situation is indeed lamentable. Especially for Zotye, some say it was out of sync with the times, lacking innovation in the era of new energy vehicles, and while they copied others, they were not criticized. Their predecessors undoubtedly include Zotye.”
