On Wednesday, May 20th, according to sources familiar with the investigation, it was revealed that US officials are expected to announce criminal charges against former Cuban leader and president Raul Castro in Miami today.
The US Columbia Broadcasting System (CBS News) reported that the US Department of Justice is expected to announce the criminal charges against Raul Castro on the same day.
Raul Castro is the brother of long-time Cuban dictator Fidel Castro. Raul Castro officially stepped down as the leader of the Cuban Communist Party in 2021, but he is still widely regarded as one of the most powerful figures in the country.
Earlier this month, US officials disclosed that the 94-year-old Raul Castro is accused of involvement in the fatal incident of the 1996 shooting down of a plane belonging to the humanitarian organization “Brothers to the Rescue” over Cuba.
The Department of Justice previously announced that an event would be held at the Freedom Tower in Miami on Wednesday to commemorate the victims of the shoot-down of the “Brothers to the Rescue” plane 30 years ago.
Jose Basulto, the founder of the organization, told the CBS Miami affiliate that he hopes Raul Castro will be indicted and stated, “It’s time for them to pay the price.”
