Motorcycle Hits Pedestrians on Zebra Crossing in Yueyang, Hunan, Resulting in 2 Deaths and 2 Injuries

On May 4th at around 8:40 pm, a traffic accident occurred near the Jin’e Mountain Park in Yueyang City, Hunan Province. Four pedestrians were crossing the road at a zebra crossing when a motorcycle sped by, hitting three of them. This resulted in 2 deaths and 1 injury, with the rider also sustaining injuries and being hospitalized.

According to reports from mainland Chinese media outlets “Extreme News” and “Nine Pairs News” on May 6th, the two deceased individuals were a 58-year-old woman named Tian and a 58-year-old man named Li, while the injured were a 62-year-old woman named Hu and the 25-year-old motorcycle rider who caused the accident.

Mr. Fan, the husband of Tian, mentioned, “My wife Tian and Hu are longtime friends, and Li is Hu’s husband.”
The couple consisting of Hu and Li had traveled from Hengyang to Yueyang for the May Day holiday. On the evening of the 4th, after dinner, Li, Hu, Tian, and her husband Mr. Fan were taking a stroll near the Jin’e Mountain Park in Yueyang. The four were crossing the road at the zebra crossing with Mr. Fan in the lead and the other three walking side by side behind him.

Suddenly, a motorcycle emerged from the Jin’e Tunnel. Li and the others stopped to let it pass. As they prepared to cross the zebra crossing again, a second motorcycle sped towards them. Sensing danger, Mr. Fan quickly crossed the zebra crossing, while Li, Tian, and Hu were hit by the motorcycle rider, who also fell to the ground. Reportedly, there were a total of seven motorcycles present at that time.

Mr. Fan rushed to speak with his wife Tian and Li, but both showed no response. After the arrival of medical personnel, it was confirmed that Tian and Li had died on the spot, while Hu and the rider were rushed to the hospital.

Hu suffered multiple fractures, including fractures to her legs, pelvis, and ribs. Although no internal bleeding in her lungs, heart, and spleen has been detected, she remains in critical condition in the ICU at Yueyang Central Hospital.

The accident determination issued by the traffic police stated that the vehicle failed to reduce speed and yield to pedestrians while crossing the zebra crossing, leading to the accident. The results of the motorcycle’s speed measurement have not been disclosed yet. Currently, the preliminary compensation proposed by the insurance company is 49,000 yuan for each deceased individual as burial expenses, and 18,000 yuan for the medical expenses of the seriously injured. However, the family of the rider involved in the accident has yet to come forward.

Ms. Yao, the daughter of Hu, mentioned that Li was her stepfather, having been married to her mother for over twenty years. The bodies of the two deceased individuals are currently being held at the funeral home. The family does not accept the current compensation plan and hopes that the relevant authorities will punish the responsible party and the group of speeding motorcycles severely.
