On the afternoon of May 3, the main stage of the Tianjin Bubble Island Music Festival (BUZZ Stage) tilted severely and partially collapsed due to a sudden strong wind, leading to the suspension of the performances. Subsequently, the organizers announced that the show would be moved to the SOSO stage.
According to Xin Huanghe News, on May 3, the main stage of the Tianjin Bubble Island Music Festival tilted severely and partially collapsed due to the sudden strong wind, resulting in the interruption of the performance and the emergency evacuation of the audience, sparking widespread public questioning of safety management and collective rights protection actions.
Footage taken by on-site spectators showed the large screen and top structure of the stage shaking dangerously, with staff urgently broadcasting instructions to evacuate the crowd. At the time of the incident, artists Zhang Chi and Li Angxing were still performing on stage.
Furthermore, according to the Front Page News, although the stage was hastily repaired and rebuilt that evening, the safety hazards were not eliminated, leading to the forced cancellation of performances by artists such as Zhang Zimo.
Reports indicated that a group representing Zhang Zimo’s fans issued a joint statement demanding the following: ensure safety precautions, thoroughly inspect onsite hazards to prevent future accidents; hold those responsible accountable for rectification, monitor the qualifications and safety approval process of stage construction; provide full compensation, unconditionally refund tickets and compensate for direct losses including transportation, accommodation, and mental anguish; terminate cooperation, demand the blacklisting of the organizing party by the talent agency to prevent artists from encountering safety hazards again.
On the same day, the “Bubble Island Music and Arts Festival · Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Station” released a performance update stating that due to sudden extreme strong winds, the performances scheduled for the Tianjin Bubble Island Music Festival BUZZ Stage were moved to the SOSO stage to ensure the safety of on-site audiences and staff. The performances resumed at 6 pm.
According to the organizers’ previous announcement, the music festival was held from May 2 to May 4 at the Dongjiang Qinhai Music Square in Tianjin, adopting a dual-stage design (BUZZ Stage and SOSO Stage). Participating artists included Wu Jianhao, You Changjing, Zhang Zimo, among others.
The incident immediately attracted attention on social media.
Netizens commented, “Today there was suddenly heavy rain and wind,” “The wind in Tianjin is particularly ominous, huge,” “The whole house was dark at that time.”
“This music festival is quite scandalous, how can the stage be built as a shoddy project,” “If it had collapsed, it would have been a disaster,” “It’s so frightening, this is too dangerous,” “Wasn’t there an early warning for strong winds? Why wasn’t precautionary measures taken or the performances temporarily paused? This is simply treating everyone’s safety as a joke!”
“Audiences and fans pointed out that the coastal area of Tianjin is known for strong winds, but the stage was not reinforced accordingly, questioning the organizers for ‘cutting corners’ and ‘illegally constructing low-quality structures.’ Prior to this incident, the music festival had experienced incidents of audience members being sent to the hospital for hypothermia during night performances, coupled with this accident, exposing inadequate emergency response plans.”
Entertainment blogger “99 Sharing Station” revealed in a blog post that, “On the afternoon of that day, the Dongjiang Qinhai Music Square in Tianjin was hit by extreme strong wind weather, causing the main stage structure to be overturned by the strong winds, visibly tilting or partially collapsing from the side. Some audience members witnessed the large screen and ceiling of the stage shaking dangerously, with staff urgently broadcasting instructions to evacuate the crowd. The previous day (May 2), audience members during the night performances were sent to the hospital for hypothermia due to the low temperature, and that day’s weather changed from sunny to extreme windy rain, exacerbating the chaos on-site. Artists were already experiencing stage shaking during their performances, causing panic among the audience and leading to crowding and fleeing scenarios.”
Public information shows that the Bubble Island Music and Arts Festival (Bubbling & Boiling) is a top Chinese youth culture and original music festival brand created by Creation Unlimited, regularly held in major cities and coastal areas in China.
