Amidst the scorching heat in northern China, the southern regions are being hit by heavy rainfall. Starting from June 14th, 11 provinces will experience heavy to torrential rain, with areas in Fujian and Guangxi facing severe downpours. In Fujian’s central and northern regions, nearly 27,000 people have been evacuated.
According to the China Meteorological Administration on June 14th, a yellow warning for heavy rain was issued. It is expected that from 2 p.m. on the 14th to 2 p.m. on the 15th, parts of Guangxi, central and northern coastal areas of Guangdong and southwest, northwest and southeast Yunnan, southern Hunan, central and eastern Jiangxi, central and northern Fujian, southern Zhejiang, as well as northern Heilongjiang, eastern Jilin, eastern Liaoning, and eastern Shandong will experience heavy to torrential rain.
Specifically, certain areas in northwestern Fujian and northeastern Guangxi will receive 100 to 200 millimeters of heavy rain. Some areas will also experience short but intense rainfall, with hourly precipitation ranging from 30 to 50 millimeters, locally exceeding 80 millimeters. Local thunderstorms and strong convective weather conditions are expected.
The Chinese Ministry of Water Resources announced the activation of a level IV emergency response for flood prevention in Fujian, Guangxi, Guizhou, and Yunnan, stating that the Xijiang River may face its first flood of 2024. Flood reports mention that some areas in Fujian, Guangxi, Guizhou, and Yunnan have experienced heavy rainfall in recent days, leading to floods exceeding the alert level in rivers like the Minjiang.
From the 14th to the 16th, heavy rainfall is forecasted in Guangxi, Fujian, eastern Yunnan, and southern Guizhou. The main stream of Xijiang River in Guangxi and its tributaries like Guijiang, and the Minjiang River in Fujian are expected to exceed flood alert levels. Additionally, some medium and small rivers may face significant flooding.
The flood prevention office in Fujian province reported that the central and northern regions of Fujian continue to experience heavy rainfall, causing local disasters. As of 6 a.m. on June 14th, the ongoing heavy rainfall has affected 51,500 people in Nanping and Sanming, with 3,133.94 hectares of crops damaged. Nearly 27,000 people have been urgently evacuated in Fujian.
Furthermore, the Hydrological and Water Resources Center of Heilongjiang Province reported on the 14th that due to the impact of rainfall, the water level at the Wo’ken River Station in Wo’ken, Boteli County, Qitaihe City, rose again. At 8 a.m. that day, the water level exceeded the warning level by 0.18 meters, reaching 130.48 meters. This flood meets the standard for flood numbering, and the “Wo’ken River 2nd flood of 2024” has occurred.
While the southern and northeastern regions are being battered by heavy rain, the northern regions of China, including Shanxi, Hebei, Henan, and Shandong, are facing extreme heat. On June 13th, in parts of northern China, temperatures soared to 43°C or even 44°C.
