Miami-Dade Police Department announced that a stabbing incident occurred at Miami International Airport on Saturday night (July 20), resulting in one person being seriously injured and leading to the evacuation of passengers from two airport terminals.
At a press conference on Sunday morning (July 21), authorities stated that the airport has since resumed normal operations.
According to current investigations, the attack took place around 11:30 p.m. on Saturday on the fourth floor of the J concourse. A news release stated, “Without provocation, the male suspect stabbed the female victim multiple times and attempted to throw her over the railing.” “The victim managed to escape to the third floor, where she was found by the police.”
The suspect has been detained at the scene, and authorities also recovered a knife.
The news release mentioned that the Miami-Dade Fire Rescue transported the victim to the Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital. Police indicated that the woman was taken to the hospital in critical condition due to multiple stab wounds.
Miami-Dade Police Department spokesperson Angel Rodriguez referred to the incident as a “senseless altercation,” but authorities did not clarify whether the two individuals knew each other. Airport officials stated that as a precautionary measure, passengers were evacuated from the H and J concourses of the airport’s South Terminal and underwent re-screening before operations resumed.
In a statement, the Miami-Dade County Police Department indicated that they are still investigating the Saturday attack and discredited reports suggesting a shooter was involved as false.
