As of 4 p.m. on December 1st, the death toll from the fire at Hong Kong’s Wang Fu Court has increased to 151, with 39 bodies still awaiting identification, and the possibility of more casualties cannot be ruled out.
Everyone is focusing on how the fire started and spread, including issues related to materials such as bamboo scaffolding, safety nets, and foam protection boards. However, the key issue that led to more casualties at Wang Fu Court is actually the problem of supervision. Following the fire, none of the fire alarms in the buildings responded, the elevators did not close in time, the automatic fire sprinkler systems did not activate, and stairwells, which should have been a refuge, were found with people who perished inside. Today, we will discuss the fire supervision issues at Wang Fu Court in Hong Kong.
