On October 1st, Israel launched ground incursions into southern Lebanon, while Iran launched a large-scale missile attack on Israel, escalating tensions in the Middle East. The Israeli Defense Forces announced the start of “Operation Northern Arrow” on the early morning of October 1st, targeting Hezbollah targets and infrastructure in southern Lebanon with limited, specific ground strikes, aiming to destroy Hezbollah’s infrastructure and allow residents in northern Israel to return home.
Israel has been involved in multiple fronts since September 29th, conducting military operations in Gaza and conducting airstrikes on dozens of Hezbollah targets in Beirut and the south of Lebanon. Israeli warplanes also targeted a power plant, port, and oil facilities in Houthi-controlled Hodeidah, Yemen. On September 27th, the Israeli Air Force used bunker-buster bombs to destroy Hezbollah’s headquarters in Lebanon, killing Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah and several commanders. Following this, Hezbollah appointed Nasrallah’s cousin, Hassan Yazin, as the new leader. However, Yazin was assassinated in Beirut’s southern suburbs less than 24 hours later, becoming the shortest-reigning Hezbollah leader.
On October 1st, Hezbollah retaliated using new Fateh-4 missiles, targeting the Mossad headquarters in the outskirts of Tel Aviv and the Israeli intelligence unit 8200 headquarters in Glilot. However, both missiles were intercepted, with only two drivers sustaining injuries.
After multiple threats of retaliation against Israel, Iran finally launched a large-scale missile attack on Israeli territory on October 1st, firing nearly 200 missiles. The Israeli military stated that the United States had informed them about Iran’s plans to immediately launch missiles at Israel, and as a result, the Israeli defense system intercepted all the Iranian missile attacks.
According to reports from Iranian senior officials cited by Reuters, it was Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei who ordered the missile attack on Israel, emphasizing that Iran was prepared for any retaliatory actions. Officials also revealed that Khamenei was currently in a secure location.
Since late July, Hezbollah’s top leadership has been gradually eliminated by targeted Israeli strikes, nearly wiping out the organization’s leadership. The Israeli military announced the elimination of eight out of nine of Hezbollah’s top military commanders, leaving only the Deputy Secretary-General Imad Qasim. Hezbollah has yet to appoint a new leader.
