Recently, according to reports from Bloomberg and Germany’s Bild, the German Army is preparing to significantly expand its forces in the next ten years, with plans to acquire over 3,000 new armored vehicles. The massive procurement of ready-made main battle tanks by the German military before 2029 will have a huge impact on future European main battle tank programs.
In this procurement plan of the German Army, the preferred choice for main battle tanks should be the Leopard 2A8, while Rheinmetall’s KF51 Black Panther tank may also make a comeback and enter service with the German Army.
The Leopard 2A8 is the latest and most advanced model in the enduring Leopard 2 tank family. It is equipped with state-of-the-art protection systems, including an Israeli-designed Trophy active protection system, enhanced mine and improvised explosive device capabilities, upgraded optical systems, and improved battlefield survivability.
As for the KF51 Black Panther tank, it is the newest member of Rheinmetall’s tank family and can be seen as the successor to the current Leopard 2, incorporating many cutting-edge technologies with active, reactive, and passive protection capabilities. Rheinmetall claims that the protection level of the KF51 exceeds that of the Leopard 2A8. The KF51 is equipped with a 130mm smoothbore gun, which is 50% more powerful than the 120mm smoothbore gun of the Leopard 2A8. It features an auto-loader and is also equipped with a missile launcher capable of firing the Israeli “Hero-120” missiles.
